Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is the surgical placement of breast implants to increase fullness and projection of the breasts or to improve symmetry of the breasts. Clinically referred to as augmentation mammoplasty, a Breast Augmentation procedure is used cosmetically to:

  • Enlarge a naturally small breast, most commonly the result of heredity
  • Restore breast volume lost following pregnancy, as a result of breast feeding or due to weight loss
  • Achieve better symmetry when breasts are moderately disproportionate in size and shape
  • Enhance your self-image and self-confidence

Breast Augmentation Los Angeles also may be used for breast reconstruction after mastectomy or injury.Breast augmentation does not correct severely drooping breasts. If you want your breasts to look fuller and to be lifted due to sagging, a breast lift may be required in conjunction with breast augmentation.

Breast lifting can often be done at the same time as your enlargement or may require a separate operation. Your plastic surgeon will assist you in making this decision.

Who can have Breast Augmentation?

Anyone who is troubled by the shape, or size of their breasts. All plastic surgery patients must be deemed medically fit for surgery by the plastic surgeon who will be performing your procedure.

What kind of anesthetic is used during Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation is performed under general anesthetic.

How long does a Breast Augmentation procedure take?

Breast Augmentation at our Beverly Hills Surgery Center, can take from one to three hours to complete.

What do I have to do to prepare for Breast Augmentation?

You will be examined by a physician and undergo blood work testing to ensure that you are medically fit for surgery. You should stop taking aspirin, or any anti-flammatory drugs and stop smoking well before your procedure.

You will be given a prescription to antibiotics and painkillers, which you should fill before your surgery so that you have them easily available on day of surgery and your driver and/or caregiver is not running around to drugstores on the day of your surgery.

What happens on the day of Breast Augmentation?

A friend or family member must bring you to the Beverly Hills Institute of Plastic Surgery. Our Patient Care Coordinator will greet you and bring in into the an examining room, where your Plastic Surgeon will mark outlines on the areas of your breast.

Photos will be taken of your breasts, so that you will be able to compare the results to another set of photos that will be taken after you have fully recovered from the surgery.

Following the surgery, you will be placed in a support/pressure garment that will help to reduce inflammation and bruising.

Since the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery are critical for optimal recovery, The Beverly Hills Institute of Plastic Surgery suggests that patients consider recovering at Serenity Aftercare. Serenity is located in Santa Monica and is staffed by medical professionals that are specially trained in caring for patients immediately recovering from plastic surgery. If you do not elect to recover at Serenity, a friend or family member must come to the Beverly Hills Institute of Plastic Surgery to pick you up after your surgery and bring you safely home. Someone must remain home with you for the first 48 to 72 hours, to assist you as you recover from your surgery. If you elect to recover at Serenity, you will be chauffeured directly to Serenity immediately following your surgery.

Your incisions will be left open to drain and heal. A large amount of fluid will leak from the incision location. This will require regular changing of sterile absorption pads.

Your surgeon will call you once you are safely at Serenity or home, to see how you are doing and to make sure you are recovering normally.

What is the Breast Augmentation recovery process?

Breast Augmentation recovery includes a post-surgical recovery period of 24 to 48 hours and an additional reduced-activity period of a few days. You will likely experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks.

Exercise and normal activity can resume at the direction of your plastic surgeon. Over time, post-surgical swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.

You will be given specific instructions that may include:

How to care for your breasts following Breast Augmentation surgery, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection.

BE CAREFUL: Following your physician’s instructions is key to the success of your surgery. It is important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during the time of healing.

Typical Breast Augmentation risks include: unfavorable scarring, bleeding (hematoma), infection, poor healing of incisions, changes in nipple or breast sensation, may be temporary or permanent, capsular contracture, which is the formation of firm scar tissue around the implant, implant leakage or rupture, wrinkling of the skin over the implant, anesthesia risks, fluid accumulation, blood clots, pain, which may persist, deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications, possibility of revisional surgery.
