Chin surgery, also known as mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reshape the chin by reducing the shape of the natural chin tissue. Many times the Beverly Hills Institute of Plastic Surgery may recommend chin surgery to a patient having nose surgery in order to achieve facial proportion, as the size of the chin may magnify or minimize the perceived size of the nose. Chin surgery helps provide a harmonious balance to your facial features so that you feel better about the way you look.
If you have an abnormally large chin and normal function of your jaw, Chin Reduction Los Angeles surgery may be the procedure of choice for you. Anyone who is troubled by the size or shape of their chin can be a good Chin Augmentation candidate. All plastic surgery patients must be deemed medically fit for surgery by the plastic surgeon who will be performing your procedure.
Chin Reduction is performed under general anesthetic.
Chin Reduction can take from one to three hours to complete.
You will be examined by a physician and undergo blood work testing to ensure that you are medically fit for surgery. You should stop taking aspirin, or any anti-flammatory drugs and should stop smoking well before your surgery.
You will be given a prescription to antibiotics and painkillers, which you should fill before your surgery so that you have them easily available on day of surgery and your driver and/or caregiver is not running around to drugstores on the day of your surgery.
A friend or family member must bring you to the Beverly Hills Institute of Plastic Surgery. Our Patient Care Coordinator will greet you and bring in into the an examining room, where your Plastic Surgeon will mark outlines on your chin.
Photos will be taken of your chin so that you will be able to compare the results to another set of photos that will be taken after you have fully recovered from the surgery.
Since the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery are critical for optimal recovery, The Beverly Hills Institute of Plastic Surgery suggests that patients consider recovering at Serenity Aftercare. Serenity is located in Santa Monica and is staffed by medical professionals that are specially trained in caring for patients immediately recovering from plastic surgery. If you do not elect to recover at Serenity, a friend or family member must come to the Beverly Hills Institute of Plastic Surgery to pick you up after your surgery and bring you safely home. Someone must remain home with you for the first 48 to 72 hours, to assist you as you recover from your surgery. If you elect to recover at Serenity, you will be chauffeured directly to Serenity immediately following your surgery.
Your surgeon will call you once you are safely at Serenity or home, to see how you are doing and to make sure you are recovering normally.
After chin surgery, the area is covered by a surgical dressing. For the first week to ten days of recovery, expect to feel some degree of swelling, redness, and bruising, along with tenderness and discomfort. Your ability to chew will be limited, requiring a liquid or soft food diet for a few days. You may also experience discomfort when speaking, yawning, or otherwise moving your mouth. Many patients find that their chin feels tight or stretched. This sensation usually subsides within a week. Patients are typically able to return home the same day as the procedure and to work and other daily activities in about a week.
Like all surgery, they are always risks. Typical Chin Reduction Los Angeles risks include: infection and excessive bleeding. If nerve damage occurs, it could lead to temporary or permanent numbness.
